15 Facts about Gandhi ji's Khadi and charkha movement :

1. The khadi movement by Gandhiji aimed at boycotting foreign cloth and to promote rural self employment and self reliance instead of using cloth manufactured industrially in Britain.





2. khadi means the cloth that is hand spun and hand woven.

3.Gandhiji symbolizes khadi as symbol of nationalism and equality. It was his belief that reconstruction of society and effective satyagraha against foreign rule can be possible on through khadi. 

4.Gandhiji started his movement for khadi in 1918.

5.The word 'Khadi' is derived from ‘khaddar’, a term for handspun fabric in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan. While khadi is usually manufactured from cotton, contrary to popular belief, it is also made from silk and woolen yarn .

6.In 1905 charkha became a symbol of the swadeshi movement. 

7. The initial model of charkha was floor charkha. It was a simple wooden charkha that was placed on the ground and the spinner would kneel or sit beside it.

8.It is believed that Gandhi devised a nifty, portable spinning wheel - the peti charkha - in 1930 during his time in Poona's Yerwada Jail after his initiation of a Civil Disobedience Movement.

9.Charkha was the physical embodiment and symbol of Gandhi ji's constructive program. It represents swadeshi, self sufficiency because wheel is at the center of a network of cotton growers , weavers and distributers.

10. Later the charkha became the symbol of nationalism because of the following reasons :- 1. Charkha symbolizes manual Labour he adopted charkha as he wanted to glorify the dignity of manual Labour and not of technology and machines.

11.Spinning was seen by Gandhiji as an economic and political activity that could bring together the diverse population of South Asia, and allow the nationalist movement to connect to the broader Indian population.

12.The idea to employ the spinning wheel as a symbol of national resurgence and as an economic and political weapon against the British Raj came intuitively to Mahatma Gandhi in 1908 when he was going from London to South Africa.

13.Charkha found a place in the programme of Indian National Congress as well as on the first National flag (also called swaraj flag) in 1921.

14.The flag began to be officially hoisted by congressmen from the 38th session of the congress held at Andhra Pradesh.

15. The charkha on the flag was later simplified to the Ashoka chakra the wheel that represents UNITY AND LAW  in 1947.
